Start With Allah's Name Before Embark on Anything

Starting any task with bismillah makes us aware of Allah, and gives us a warning that anything we undertake must be in accordance with the will and pleasure of Allah. The Prophet (saws) told us to say bismillah before wudu, eating, wearing garments, even going to the bathroom and intimate relationships between spouses.

Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘When any of you wants to eat, he should mention the Name of Allah in the begining, (i.e., say Bismillah). If he forgets to do it in the beginning, he should say Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu (I begin with the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).’ [Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud]

Whenever we start something saying bismillah, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala puts special blessings in it. He removes any deficiencies that may come into the task, aids to flourish it and removes the influence of Shaytan from it. The following story from a sahabah reflects this fact:

We were once present in the assembly of Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam. Food was brought to him. 1 did not observe any food that had so much barakah at the beginning and at the end of which there was no barakah left in the food. We therefore asked Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam reason?. He replied: ‘In the beginning we all recited ‘Bismillah’ before we began eating. Then someone in the end joined us, and did not recite ”Bismillah’. The shaitaan ate with him’ [Shamail Tirmidhi]

Also the Prophet (saws) said, ‘Any undertaking embarked upon without pronouncing Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim is deprived of all blessings.’ [Pondering Over the Quran, Islahi]

  1. It contains three of Allah’s most beautiful names:
    1. Allah: the Proper name by which He introduces Himself to us. Scholars also say that it comes from al-Ilah, which means the God (with a capital g).
    2. Ar Rahman: The extremely merciful, the level of His mercy is beyond our imagination. The Prophet (saws) said: Allah is more merciful to His slaves than this woman is to her child. (Agreed upon)
    3. Ar Raheem: The constantly merciful. No matter where we are and what we do, His mercy never seizes.

Saying bismillah is the sunnah of Prophets even before Muhammad (saws), as Allah mentioned in the Quran.

وَقَالَارْكَبُوافِيهَابِسْمِاللَّهِمَجْرَاهَاوَمُرْسَاهَاۚإِنَّرَبِّيلَغَفُورٌرَّحِيمٌ

And [Noah] said, “Embark therein; in the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.” [11:41]

The Queen of Sheba read Sulayman (as)’s letter:

إِنَّهُمِنسُلَيْمَانَوَإِنَّهُبِسْمِاللَّهِالرَّحْمَٰنِالرَّحِيمِ

Indeed, it is from Solomon, and indeed, it reads: ‘In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful… [27:30]

All Praise is due to Allah we ask Him to let us die in the path of Qur'an and Sunnah.
